Description
Jezebel by K.R. Meera
Jezebel by K.R. Meera is a powerful contemporary literary fiction novel that explores gender, marriage, patriarchy, judgment, freedom, identity, and the emotional strength of an independent woman. Originally written in Malayalam and translated into English by Abhirami Girija Sriram and K.S. Bijukumar, this bold and thought-provoking novel presents the story of a young doctor in Kerala who is forced to confront the harsh realities of a deeply patriarchal society.
The novel follows Jezebel, a brilliant and educated woman whose professional success does not protect her from emotional cruelty, social pressure, and the painful expectations placed on women. As she struggles through a difficult marriage and complicated divorce proceedings, the story reveals the hidden secrets, emotional wounds, and social judgments that shape her life.
K.R. Meera uses the name Jezebel to challenge the way strong women are often misunderstood, blamed, or labelled by society. Like the Biblical figure of Queen Jezebel, who has long been judged through a negative lens, the novel questions whether independent women are ever allowed to live freely without being condemned. Through this powerful comparison, the book explores how women are judged for desire, ambition, anger, intelligence, and resistance.
Jezebel is especially valuable for readers interested in Indian literature, feminist fiction, translated fiction, contemporary women’s writing, psychological fiction, and literary novels that examine social injustice. The novel combines emotional intensity, sharp social observation, and beautifully controlled storytelling to create a memorable portrait of a woman fighting for dignity and selfhood.
This book is ideal for readers who enjoy serious fiction with strong female characters, complex relationships, family conflict, social criticism, and moral depth. K.R. Meera’s writing explores not only one woman’s personal struggle, but also larger questions about gender, power, marriage, religion, reputation, and freedom.
Perfect for readers interested in Indian fiction, Malayalam literature in translation, feminist novels, contemporary literary fiction, and stories about women’s lives, Jezebel is a compelling and important novel about survival, judgment, and the right to live on one’s own terms.
